BEATRICE – The Beatrice Police Department is encouraging people with smart phones to download a free application, called AlertSense. It will connect people into the Southeast Communications system to receive things such as Amber Alert messages and weather updates, along with alerts that target a specific area.

Chief of Police Bruce Lang says for several years, police have used a similar system, but he says this one is better, and will be less expensive.

People can give their address at http://public.alertsense.com/SignUp/?regionid=1288 and have the notification system provide the alerts, at no charge. You can also register more than one address. The system also provides alerts through the homeland security system.
